One of the most ancient type of Angora rabbits had their origin in Turkey, like other animals with Angora hair, such as cats and goats. In the years 1700, the Angora rabbits became popular with french royalty, as pets. From France its popularity spread to England and Germany. It’s in the beginning of 1900 that the Angora rabbits make their appearing in United States. So began the breeding for this type of rabbits in North America for the fiber.
All longhair Angora breeds have the same origin, but they were develop differently. Each of them fallowing a standard from their respective countries. What differenciate each of these breeds are : the body conformation, the density and quality of the fiber.
The German Angora must be large at the shoulder, the lenght of its body must be 3 times longer than its width. It must look like a big tube with a domed back. This shape make it more easy to shave.
The breed is continuously in development since about 60 years. The German Angora is not reconize by the registry ARBA, but it is reconize by IAGARB and it must be white with ruby-red eyes. ARBA reconize the white with red-ruby eyes as a Satin Angora. Other breeds of Angora are crossbred with the German Angora to obtain other colors, they are hybrids. Here in our breeding our German Angora rabbits produce around 3 pounds of fibre each 3 months.
The Giant Angora is not a German Angora. It is the result of crossbreeding with different large breeds. These Giant Angora were presented for the first time in 1985, by Louise Walsh at a rabbits breeders convention. They are Commercial Angora which are German typed and reconize by ARBA.
