The handling of rabbits must be done in a secure manner. The nails, the speed at which they can jump, are to be consider with extreme caution. When being handle, a rabbit react by running away, by pure animal instinct, using its back feet which have a strong traction.

Moving a rabbit from one place to another must be done rapidly, to remove stress and jumps. An excellent way to handle a young rabbit, is to hold it by the neck, with a fist full hand and with the other hand you maintain its back feet. You must not pinch the neck, it’s better to take a large fist full, so there will be no pain, no inconfort, which would increase the movements of the rabbit. Holding the back feet avoid the panic of the rabbit and the scratchings to the handler.

When the rabbit is adult, we can still maintain it by the neck, but using the other hand to hold the derriere. Bring the body toward your chest, far from your face by precaution. Its back feet will hold on your body. When the animal will feel that its feet are on a solid surface, it will not try to escape nor to scratch.

During handling of rabbits, the person must dress appropriatly. Dress with a thick shirt and pants, like jeans, to be protected against nails. We can harvest rabbits’ hair on a table or sitting with the rabbit laying on our laps. In the case of being sitted with the rabbit, we take care to put a leather piece or a plastic on our laps. Removing the coat is long and the animal can pee. Better be protected against this type of accident.

When the shaving or cutting is over, we can clip the nails, check the ears for parasites, use fine comb to detect mites or lice. If we discover parasites, we can administrate the product recommanded by the veterinarian.
